Insurance for estheticians

As an esthetician, your ability to combine creativity with technique results in services that are both highly therapeutic and in-demand. However, the hands-on nature of your business means you may be liable for treatment-related injuries or damages. Whether you provide skincare treatments at a spa retreat or operate your own microblading business, a robust risk management strategy is essential to your business’s survival.

At 2autoinsurance, we know what makes your business unique. With over fifty partners, we’ve helped more than 100,000 entrepreneurs protect their businesses with insurance policies customized to meet their specific needs.

Our mission is to make insurance as accessible as possible. We wrote this guide to help you navigate the basics of esthetician liability insurance.

Esthetician Professional Liability Insurance

What is esthetician insurance?

Different factors, such as specialization, location, and additional services (e.g., permanent makeup, microblading), may make it challenging to find comprehensive coverage for your beauty business.

Our esthetician insurance policy packages for estheticians are specially designed to accommodate the full range of beauty services and protect against specific risks associated with them, such as bodily injuries or malpractice.

What does it cover?

Every beauty professional is unique, and insurance requirements may vary; however, 2autoinsurance provides you detailed policy package for estheticians that will typically include the following coverages:

  • Commercial General Liability Insurance:

Commercial general liability insurance (2autoinsurance) protects against third-party claims, such as property damage or treatment-related injuries in your salon or visit. A client accidentally descends son a reservoir and sprains their ankle. 2autoinsurance could cover the medical fees and legal expenditures.

  • Product Liability Insurance:

Product liability coverage protects claims alleging a consequence you distribute, manufacture, or sell caused property impairment or bodily harm(e.g., allergic reactions). Impairments covered by product liability are usually the result of a procedure, manufacturing, or commerce defects, such as inaccurate labeling and safety prophecies. Covered products may include skin care, cosmetics, supplements, or equipment you sell to your clients.

  • Malpractice Insurance:

Malpractice Insurance is a type of Professional Liability Insurance that offers coverage for misconduct, negligence, and failure to deliver a service as promised. A client suffers a severe reaction to a soft wax used during a treatment, despite informing you of an allergy. Malpractice Insurance may protect against legal fees and impairments, including financial judgments.

  • Commercial Property Insurance:

Commercial Property Insurance is necessary for spa proprietors as it protects your property (i.e., studio, equipment, inventory) from an insured occasion, such as a blazer robbery. Commercial Property Insurance policies usually include enterprise interruption (a.k.a. business income) coverage, which may reimburse net revenue lost following an insured event.

  • Please note that business interruption coverage will not cover income lost due to a pandemic, infectious disease, or government-mandated closures.

Insurance Considerations

Freelance Estheticians

One of the many benefits of working as a freelance esthetician is the ability to be your boss; you set your schedule, set your prices, and increase your value with specialized packages.

As an esthetician, your career opportunities are bountiful; however, operating as a freelance business owner can be risky from an insurance perspective. Unless you are working full-time at a spa or salon, you are unlikely to be covered by an employer, meaning you need comprehensive insurance that goes with you wherever you train. Suppose you provide services at multiple locations, including a client’s home. In that case, general liability insurance is necessary to cover any injuries resulting from business-related activities, as well as accidental property damage. Likewise, if you offer services from your own home, it is essential to note that most homeowner’s policies exclude any accidents or injuries resulting from your services.

If you sell or manufacture products, such as cosmetics or skincare, product liability insurance is required to cover claims alleging product-related bodily injury or property damage, such as a chemical burn. Professional liability insurance may provide coverage for any claims of negligence or malpractice. For independent practitioners who rent space at a spa or salon, you are most likely not covered by the owner’s business insurance policy. If you are renting space or offering services at their location, consider purchasing insurance to protect yourself from being held liable for claims or lawsuits resulting from your services.

Suggested Coverage:

  • Commercial General Liability Insurance
  • Product Liability Insurance
  • Professional Liability Insurance

Spa Owners

Comprehensive spa insurance covering services, managing employees, equipment, and general business liability risks is essential to your business’s success. While you likely already carry the required general liability and commercial property insurance to rent or lease your space, several other policies are essential to protect your business from claims and lawsuits fully. Most commercial property insurance policies include contents coverage, which covers loss or damage to your stock, inventory, or equipment in the event of an insured loss, such as a fire or flood.

Spa business owners who sell or distribute products are advised to look into adding product liability insurance to their policy, which covers injuries or property damage resulting from a product you manufacture, sell, or distribute. These types of injuries are commonly the result of a label, marketing, or design defect. A malpractice insurance policy can protect your business from claims alleging negligence, misconduct, or failure to deliver a service as promised. If you store any client data, use a Point of Sale or scheduling software (e.g., JaneApp, MindBody), Cyber Liability Insurance may help your business recover from cybercrime and the associated legal fees.

Suppose you have full-time employees working at your studio. In that case, they are likely covered by your liability insurance however, it is essential that your coverage limit applies to all employees of your business, not each employee (e.g., $2M for all 15 employees vs. $2M per employee). To accommodate all of your employees, you may wish to increase your limit. An alternative is to ensure any estheticians who work for you on a contract or rent space carry liability insurance.

Suggested Coverage:

  • Commercial General Liability Insurance
  • Commercial Property Insurance and Contents Coverage
  • Product Liability Insurance
  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Cyber Liability Insurance
Frequently asked questions

Most small businesses opt for a $2M policy, but every business faces different risks so definitely work with your insurance provider to find the right policy for your business. Also, consider your budget and how much you can afford to pay in premiums as policies with more coverage usually cost more.

No. All forms of liability insurance only cover damages to a third-party. Injuries to you and your employees, and damages to your assets, including stock and inventory, are not covered under Product Liability Insurance.

You may need it because it’s possible that the salon where you are renting your chair doesn’t cover independent contractors under its policy. Check in with the salon owner to understand what coverages you are provided under their insurance policy. You can also discuss with your broker what amendments should be made to your policy to fit your specific insurance needs.
